THE STORY OF

THE NUTCRACKER

Dr. Drosselmeyer

Dr. Drosselmeyer is Clara’s mysterious and eccentric godfather in The Nutcracker, known for his magical abilities and inventive mind. He gifts Clara the nutcracker and orchestrates the fantastical events that unfold, leading her on an unforgettable adventure.

“Mr. C knew that if you’re going to develop a community of arts and culture, you had to include children into that circle,” Mark Borchelt, (12 years as dancer), recalls of Mr C. “If children saw other kids on stage they would dream of themselves in this role. You’re developing both future dancers, and a new audience base.”

The Nutcracker is the most important prop in the production. What some might not know is the amount of thought, design, and technology that went into the toy doll.

Originally built by Dr. Merrill Lessley in the early 60’s, the grandfather clock is the one prop that has stood in every Ballet West production.
