Dr. Drosselmeyer finally opens the mysterious package—a nutcracker for Clara, dressed in the blue and gold uniform of a soldier. Clara falls in love with her nutcracker at once and dances with him, to the joy of the other children.

Productions of The Nutcracker proliferated quickly across the United States after Mr. C’s success. Many of these stagings depicted Drosselmeyer as sinister, but Mr. C wanted a more quirky character, filled with mystery.
